Does your makeup look ordinary, hardly helping to make you more beautiful at all? A woman might conclude that her make up application looks bad because she did not buy the most expensive, top quality make up. In reality though, if you have good brushes and sponges and choose the right make up colors, you can really get away with cheap makeup. It's a matter of the right colors and applying them neatly (good tools help).
The greatest thing about the high-brow designer cosmetics brands, especially those that cater to mature women, is that they tend to stick with really pretty, plausible, neutral color palettes. Therefore, in buying them you are less likely to get into bad bright colors, too much sparkle, and all the other common make up mistake traps you can fall into if left unsupervised in Wal-Mart. They force you to make safe choices.
Yet once you understand what colors work best on you, you can easily copycat the designer color shades with cheaper dupes. You can get most of the make up you need inexpensively at the drug store and reserve only a few can't live without top quality items (like eyeliner and concealer) to buy at the the Mac, Sephora or Dior counters. Saving money on makeup frees up some cash for other beauty procedures you might want.
Cosmetic Sponges
One thing I learned about make up is that the sponges and make up applicators that come with the make up that you purchase are for the most part useless. No matter how fancy the brand, the sponges are too flimsy and not made out of the classic sponge material. They are never as goodl as the sponges that you buy separately.
Once you get used to buying sponges separately, you'll be lost without them. Remember though, that sponges don't last forever. You can try washing them in soap and water to rid them of the bacteria, but the safest bet is to simply replace them when they start to get worn out. If little pieces of the sponge start to break off, get rid of it.
Different sponges are made for different reasons I know, but the only sponge you really need are those classic wedge type ones that you can pick up at the drug store. I look for a variety pack. Sometimes you can find a pack of those sponges with a few large ones thrown into the mixture. The large round ones are my absolute favorite and I always look for those.
Some pressed powders come with velour sponges or satin covered sponges that I think are more or less useless. I'd rather use a make up brush for that. But for concealer application and liquid foundation application, the classic old make up sponges are the ones you should buy.
To copycat that celebrity caliber, flawless make up look, buy your self a good set of make up sponges and make up brushes. Use a sponge to apply concealer. Use an angled precision makeup brush to apply your eye shadow neatly. For bronzer make up be sure to use a nice, plush, medium or jumbo make up brush. Finally, to make minor flaw corrections get a medium make up paint brush to use for applying pressed powder. Lighten dark shadowy areas of the face such as the creases around your nostrils using that brush and pressed powder.
Make up Brushes
When you see a professional make up artist you see all this make up and a plethora of paint brushes. Suffice it to say that a make up artists brushes need to be used on many faces. The pro needs all kinds of brushes in all sizes and they have to be kept clean and sanitary.
As an individual woman, you don't need to go crazy however make up brushes are an essential if your want to up your make up skills and make your face look it's best. Throw out all those little blush brushes inside any make up that you buy. And, throw out those little sponge tipped eye shadow apply sticks. Never use the ones that come free with the shadow because a brush works better.
Go out to the drugstore or better yet beauty supply store and buy your self two sets of brushes. I say two, because sometimes you'll use one brush for a certain thing (like applying pressed powder to correct last minute flaws) and you won't want to pollute the brush with other colors. Same goes for eye shadow, you may have two mainstay colors. Buy two medium sized blush brushes, since you may have one for an all over the face color and one for a hint of color at the cheeks.
Since the brushes are only being used on you, you shouldn't have to be too concerned about sanitation. Wash them with bacterial soap and lay them out to dry if they start to get gross. Replace them as soon as bristles start to come off when using.
Makeup Artist
You don't have to study to be a make up artist just to apply your own make up. Remember, the pros have to do make up on a variety of different women each with unique aspects to their beauty and their look. As a do it your self-er, your task is way easier. You are your only client.
I'm just going to give you a few simple tips here. First of all, stay in a neutral color spectrum. If you have ever seen those cool mineral make up brands you can see how most of their colors are natural looking beige, sand, tan and light browns. Likewise, keep mascara and eyeliner colors simple too, black or brown. The minute you go into more natural colors and veer away from harsh reds, pinks and oranges, your make up is going to improve by leaps and bounds.
Next, use the brushes. Always apply concealer with a makeup sponge bought separate. For bronzer, use a large jumbo sized make up brush and tap off the bronzer before applying it to keep the color light and natural looking. After your make up is done, if you notice darkened areas of your face like around the inner corners of your eyes, shadows along the nose or under your bottom lip, apply a neutral color pressed powder with a medium sized make up brush to lighten those areas up and blend them better into the rest of your face. The more uniform your face is, the younger you are going to look.
Lastly, always apply eye shadow colors with a precision make up brush. I really like the precise ones that have an angled end (the brush bristles are cut on a slight angle rather than straight across the bottom). This lets you get the shadow onto the eye lid neatly, especially at the inner corner of your eyes.
Equipped with good sponges for concealer and foundation, angled brush for eye shadow, jumbo brush to add sun kissed glow, and a medium brush to lighten any dark areas as a final touch up, your make up should look fabulous. Try it and see if there is an improvement. I promise it works.
